METALLIC FLEXIBLE CONDUITS

Metallic Flexible Conduits
A metallic flexible conduit (MFC) is a type of electrical raceway designed to protect and route conductors while offering a high degree of flexibility compared to rigid conduit systems. Made from helically wound, interlocking metal strips—typically galvanized steel, stainless steel, or aluminum—this conduit can bend easily without the need for special tools or fittings, making it especially useful in environments where rigid conduit would be difficult or impossible to install. Because of its construction, MFC can accommodate movement, vibration, and changes in direction, making it a preferred choice in applications involving machinery, equipment connections, and tight or irregular spaces.
One of the key advantages of metallic flexible conduit is its ability to provide moderate mechanical protection for electrical wiring. Though not as robust as rigid metal conduit, it still offers a durable barrier against physical damage, abrasions, and incidental impacts. The interlocked metal design also offers an inherent level of grounding, although grounding conductors are often still required depending on code and installation conditions. In damp or corrosive environments, stainless steel versions are sometimes selected for their enhanced resistance.
MFC is commonly used in commercial, industrial, and institutional settings where equipment needs to be relocated or serviced frequently. Its flexibility allows installers to make quick adjustments without extensive modification to the conduit path. It is also used for lighting whips, HVAC equipment connections, commercial kitchen equipment, and situations where vibration could cause rigid conduit to crack or loosen.
While metallic flexible conduit provides versatility, it does have limitations. It is not typically approved for use in wet locations unless specially listed, and its corrugated interior can make pulling long lengths of wire more challenging. Despite these considerations, MFC remains a widely used and reliable solution for wiring protection in dynamic installation environments.
